Hoje, 01/03, completo 22 invernos e, pra comemorar, nada melhor que bater um papo com o baixista de uma das minhas bandas favoritas (e mais geniais) da atualidade.
Há alguns dias atrás, conversei com o Duncan Stewart (@duncanstewart_ik), baixista da banda inglesa Basement (@basementuk). Nós abrimos nossas redes sociais para que vocês pudessem encaminhar perguntas para a banda, e selecionamos as melhores para entrarem nessa brincadeira.
Duncan é o cúmulo da simpatia e falamos sobre as dificuldades de se ter uma banda na cena underground, hiatus, capa de álbum, Promise Everything e, é claro, tour sul-americana!

A lot of people asked about the album covers of Colourmeinkindness, Songs About The Weather and Promise Everything. Does it have a meaning? Were you trying to pass a message through the covers?
DS: I’ve never thought about there being a connected message but as I looked at all the record covers in a row I think it does have a certain narrative of growing up and covering certain big areas of life. Relationships, the future, identity are all themes that can be seen in the covers and I think they work well together.
DS: Whilst writing Promise Everything we were pretty spread out geographically. Alex was in America, I was in Ipswich and the rest of the guys were in London. Ideas were constantly being sent around via emails or group messages. This meant when we actually got together before we were due to record, there was a sense of pressure which I feel we thrived on and helped shape the songs.
Which band would you like to share a tour and why? And if it already happened, which show was the most memorable one?
DS: I would love to tour with Deftones. They've been a band I've consistently listened to since I was young and being able to watch them play every night would be amazing.
Basement has been influencing a new generation of bands, but we would like to know what are your favorite bands and biggest influences?
DS: For Cave In and Botch. For the most part they're a lot heavier than us, but their bass players think outside the box and give a sound to the band that sets them apart from others. I definitely like to think I do that with Basement.
What made you decide to come back from the hiatus you guys got into? And we're thankful you did!
DS: I feel it simply came down to us missing playing music together. We'd all been working hard at careers outside the band which was great. But I think we all realised that writing music and traveling the world with your best friends would be way more fun!
We know that having a band might be a though challenge, mostly in the underground scene, so we're wondering what was the most awful situation you've ever faced as a band?
DS: There is one situation that immediately comes to mind that I know the rest of the guys will agree with. We played a show in Chicago and had to catch a flight the next morning to Oakland in California. We ended up missing our flight by 10 minutes and were told we wouldn't be able to get one till at least the next day. We thought we were going to have to cancel the show that evening and all our belongings were on a plane to California. It sucked! Thankfully our tour manager managed find us a flight to San Francisco and it all worked out. But yeah, I never want to go through that again.
The band is getting bigger and bigger in Brazil. Is there any chance you guys might be playing a south american tour this year?
DS: I can't say for sure this year but we really want to make it happen! None of us have ever been to Brazil and we've heard nothing but great things from different bands who have played. So hopefully we can make it out and play some shows for you guys!

Muitos dos nossos leitores nos questionaram sobre as capas do Colourmeinkindness, Songs About The Weather e Promise Everything. Elas possuem algum significado? Existe uma mensagem por trás das capas?
DS: Acho que nunca parei pra pensar se realmente existe alguma conexão ou mensagem nelas (capas), mas olhando todas juntas, eu acredito que tenha sim um pouco da narrativa sobre o que é crescer, e diz muito à respeito da vida em geral; relacionamentos, futuro, identidade... Todos esses tópicos podem ser encontrados nas capas e acho que funcionam muito bem juntos.
Ainda sobre os álbuns, como foi o processo criativo do Promise Everything? Qual a maior inspiração deste álbum?
DS: Enquanto trabalhávamos no Promise Everything, todos estávamos geograficamente bastante distantes: Alex estava nos EUA, eu em Ipswich e os outros membros estavam em Londres. Sempe acabávamos encaminhando nossas ideias via email ou em grupos de chat, então quando finalmente nos encontramos antes das gravações, a pressão estava ali. Mas superamos esse momento e no fim, isso ajudou-nos moldar as músicas.
Com qual banda gostariam de dividir uma turnê e por quê? E se já rolou, qual foi o show mais memorável?
DS: Eu adoraria entrar em tour com o Deftones, por ser uma banda a qual acompanho e ouço desde muito novo, e ter a oportunidade de vê-los tocar toda noite seria simplesmente incrível.
Vocês têm influenciado uma nova geração de bandas, mas nós queremos saber quais são suas bandas favoritas e maiores influências?
DS: For Cave In e Botch. Eles decididamente são muito mais 'pesados' que a gente, porém seus baixistas pensam 'fora da caixa', o que diferencia a banda de qualquer outra coisa. Eu gosto de pensar que posso fazer o mesmo no Basement.
O que os fez retornar do hiatus? E precisamos dizer: estamos gratos por isso!
DS: Simplesmente porque sentíamos falta de tocar juntos. Todos estávamos trabalhando em carreiras paralelas, o que foi ótimo, porém em um certo momento todos concluímos que escrever, fazer música e viajar o mundo com nossos melhores amigos seria muito mais divertido!
Se tem algo que nós entendemos, é o quão difícil é ser uma banda, principalmente no underground. Então estávamos pensando: qual foi a pior situação que vocês já enfrentaram como banda?
DS: Eu consigo te responder de bate-pronto e acho que todos os meninos irão concordar comigo. Tocamos em Chicago e tínhamos que pegar um vôo para Oakland na manhã seguinte. Perdemos nosso vôo por dez minutos, e fomos informados de que não seria possível reagendar até o dia seguinte. Todos pensamos que precisaríamos cancelar nosso show naquela noite, e pra ajudar, todos os nossos pertences e instrumentos estavam no avião pra Califórnia. Foi péssimo!
Por sorte, nosso tour manager conseguiu nos realocar para um vôo a San Francisco e no fim deu tudo certo, mas é uma situação que eu nunca quero passar de novo.
A banda está ficando cada vez maior no Brasil. Existe alguma chance de vocês fazerem uma turnê sul-americana esse ano?
DS: Eu acredito que não nesse ano, mas nós realmente queremos que role! Nenhum de nós jamais esteve no Brasil e temos ouvido maravilhas de diferentes bandas que tocaram por aí. Então vamos torcer para que consigamos resolver tudo e fazer alguns shows pra vocês!
